GOAT ROCK
About

About the place

Goat Rock is our off-grid retreat: a block of steep hill country in New Zealand with no cell reception, no infrastructure, and a population of feral goats that predates us. The rock itself sits on the first ridge above the gate. On most mornings there is a goat on it, looking down at whoever is opening the latch. We named the place after it.

The sign on the gate was routed by hand from a pine offcut. The skull was found on the block. It seemed rude not to use it.

Building out the patch

We are doing it one project at a time, with whatever the hill gives us.

  • Solar: Power from the sun, with batteries for the evenings.
  • Water: Caught and stored on the hill.
  • House: Built by us, slowly.
  • Forest: Rewilding the surrounding land back into native bush.
  • Birds: Nest boxes so they have somewhere safe from predators.
  • Sandflies: A battle, not a project. Ongoing.

This site keeps the notes, the photos and the odd piece of software that comes out of all that. Articles are the notes. The playground is where the software ends up.

Visiting

At some stage we may host WWOOFers and visitors from overseas who want to help with the planting or the build. If that sounds like you, say hello. Bring insect repellent.
